Overview

IBM, a fortune 250 IT company, enlisted DXC to develop an application in collaboration with a third-party firm. The project aimed to deliver a MVP for client beta testing within 14 weeks and to demonstrate our strong development capabilities for future collaborations.

As a Senior Product Designer, I played a pivotal role in guiding the design direction, specifying UI details, overseeing front-end execution, and ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders.

The Challenge

The project faced several hurdles that required swift adaptation and strategic problem-solving. The shift to virtual workshops due to COVID-19 introduced difficulties in initial discovery and collaboration, necessitating the effective use of various online tools. Additionally, there was a disconnect between design concepts and feasible implementation within the 14-week timeline, requiring a focus on essential features over styling. The unavailability of Figma forced us to utilize Abstract for design presentation, while staffing shortages led to my direct involvement in front-end development tasks. These challenges tested our ability to adapt and innovate under pressure.

  • Design vs. Development Disconnect
  • Tool Limitations
  • Staff Shortages

Result

The project was a success, with the MVP delivered on schedule, impressing stakeholders with our adaptability and execution under tight deadlines. The enhanced front-end capabilities were achieved through a deepened understanding of React, Git, Docker, and advanced skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Effective collaboration between design and development was ensured, despite tool limitations and staffing shortages, by strategically prioritizing features and using Abstract to facilitate communication. Overall, the project demonstrated our resilience and ability to meet client expectations, positioning DXC as a reliable partner for future initiatives.
